The neurotoxin in Botox adheres to the muscle’s nerve receptor, stopping the movement that causes the vertical wrinkles around the mouth.

Treatment for Vertical Lip Lines

If you have small lines around your mouth, Botox and other cosmetic injectables can smooth those wrinkles. Botox injections can be performed in a short office visit, usually about 15 minutes, and you can go back to your normal activities after your appointment. The neurotoxin in Botox takes a few days to take effect, and the complete results can take up to 14 days. Once the muscles are relaxed, the lip lines can be smoothed for up to four months before the neurotoxin wears off. Repeated treatments are needed to maintain results.

Not all lip lines will disappear with Botox injections. Some wrinkles are not caused by the muscles moving and are due to thinner skin. Dermal filler injections can plump under fine lines around the mouth – you can use both lip filler and Botox together to achieve a more youthful mouth.
